MS-102 Retires on 30 November 2026: What Microsoft 365 Admins Do Next

Microsoft retires the MS-102 exam and the Microsoft 365 Certified: Administrator Expert certification on 30 November 2026 at 11:59 PM Central Standard Time, which is 05:59 GMT on 1 December in the UK. After that you cannot earn or renew the certification. Microsoft's replacement route is AB-650, Administering Microsoft 365 and AI Services, an associate-level exam that is still in beta as of October 2026.

What retires, and what does not

Three things end on 30 November 2026: the MS-102 exam, the Administrator Expert certification it completes, and the official MS-102T00 instructor-led course. Microsoft's course retirement page names AB-650T00 as the replacement course. Several Copilot administration courses, including MS-4002 and MS-4017, are also listed to retire on 30 October 2026 with AB-650T00 as their replacement, which shows where Microsoft is folding Copilot administration.

What does not retire: the associate certifications that served as MS-102 prerequisites. As of today, MS-102 is the only exam on Microsoft's scheduled retirement list, so Endpoint Administrator (MD-102), Teams Administrator, Identity and Access Administrator (SC-300) and Information Security Administrator (SC-401) carry on.

What happens to the certification you already hold

Microsoft says an earned certification stays on your transcript in your Microsoft Learn profile after it retires. What you lose is the ability to renew it, so the question is your expiry date.

• Renewal opens six months before expiry. If your Administrator Expert certification expires before the end of May 2027, your renewal window is open now or opens before 30 November. Microsoft recommends renewing before retirement if you are eligible. Pass the free, open-book assessment and your certification is extended by a year from its expiry date.
• Do not wait for a reminder email. Microsoft's renewal FAQ says renewal reminders are suppressed for retiring certifications, and the renewal window may be shortened. Check your profile yourself.
• If your expiry is later in 2027, no renewal window will open before the retirement date. The certification stays on your transcript and runs to its expiry without a renewal option.
• Your associate certification is separate. Microsoft's FAQ confirms that expert and associate certifications are renewed separately, so keep renewing MD-102 or SC-300 as normal.

If you work for a Microsoft partner

Microsoft's October 2026 Partner Center announcements say AB-650 is being added to the Modernize Endpoints specialization and the Solutions Partner for Modern Work designation skilling metric to address the MS-102 retirement. Certifications achieved before retirement remain valid for partner purposes for one year. Tell whoever manages your partner account which credentials you hold and when you plan to sit AB-650.

Your options before 30 November

Option 1: finish MS-102 now

This only makes sense if you already hold, or will hold before the deadline, one of the associate prerequisites. Passing MS-102 alone does not award the expert credential, and after retirement Microsoft says you can no longer earn the associated certification. A pass on MS-102 without an active prerequisite by 30 November is a pass on an exam that leads nowhere.

If you qualify and you are already close, book now. Five weeks is enough to finish revision, not to start from scratch. Use the MS-102 study guide dated 28 April 2026 and its free practice assessment.

Option 2: move to AB-650

AB-650 leads to Microsoft 365 Certified: Microsoft 365 and AI Services Administrator Associate. The certification page shows one exam and no prerequisite certification. Because it is in beta, there are practical catches:

• Beta exams are not scored immediately. Microsoft gathers data on question quality first.
• The practice assessment is not available yet. Microsoft says practice assessments usually appear within eight weeks of an exam leaving beta.
• The exam is English only for now.

Beta now, or wait for general availability?

Sitting AB-650 in beta suits admins who already run Copilot and agents day to day and want the credential early, for example because a partner designation or a client contract depends on it. The trade-off is preparing without an official practice assessment and waiting weeks for a result.

Waiting for the exam to go live suits most people who are new to Copilot administration. You get an immediate score, a practice assessment usually within eight weeks, and time to build the hands-on experience the AI domain expects. Either way, start studying now: the AI objectives cover a lot of ground that no MS-102 course taught.

Option 3: build the associate base first

If you are newer to Microsoft 365 administration, an associate certification such as MD-102 gives you depth in one workload, and AB-900 covers the fundamentals of administering Copilot and agents. Both are useful whichever exam you sit next.

MS-102 versus AB-650: how the skills shift

The biggest change is that more than a third of AB-650 is about AI. The AB-650 study guide covers Copilot readiness and oversharing, SharePoint Advanced Management, Copilot settings and connectors, Microsoft 365 Copilot Cowork, third-party AI providers, agent identities in Microsoft Entra Agent ID, the agent registry, Agent 365 and the Copilot Control System for usage and cost monitoring.

Much of your MS-102 knowledge transfers. AB-650 still expects Conditional Access with Microsoft Entra ID Protection, Privileged Identity Management, administrative units, Defender for Office 365 threat policies and attack simulations, and Microsoft Purview DLP, sensitivity labels and retention. The study guide does not list Defender for Endpoint or Defender for Cloud Apps objectives, which carried real weight in MS-102.

A practical approach is to print both study guides and mark each AB-650 objective as known, rusty or new. For most MS-102 holders, the new pile will be almost entirely Copilot and agents.

What to do this week

1. Open your Microsoft Learn profile. Note the expiry date of Administrator Expert and look for a Renew button.
2. Check your prerequisite. If you are sitting MS-102, confirm the associate certification is active, not expired.
3. Book early. The exam closes at 05:59 GMT on 1 December, but do not plan around the last evening. A rescheduled appointment or an exam-day technical problem leaves no second chance.
4. Read the AB-650 study guide next to the MS-102 one, so you know your gap before you choose.
5. Get hands-on with Copilot administration. If your tenant has Copilot licences, spend time in the Copilot settings of the Microsoft 365 admin center and in SharePoint Advanced Management reports.
6. Keep your CV accurate. List Administrator Expert with the date you earned it. A retired certification you earned is still yours to show.
