Data Engineer Career in Singapore: Fabric or Databricks First?

By Abirami Seeni7 min read

Learn the shared core first: SQL, Python, PySpark and Delta Lake. Then pick the platform your target employers run. Microsoft now certifies both routes, DP-700 for Microsoft Fabric and DP-750 for Azure Databricks, and the two exams overlap heavily. For a data engineer in Singapore, the first certification is a choice about employers, not a lifetime commitment.

The skills ladder both platforms share

Platforms change faster than fundamentals. Climb these rungs in order and the platform choice becomes a small step at the top.

Rung 1: SQL you can trust in production

Joins, window functions, aggregation, MERGE and incremental loads. Learn dimensional modelling properly: DP-700 asks you to prepare data for a dimensional model, and DP-750 asks you to choose a slowly changing dimension type and design history tables.

Rung 2: Python with engineering habits

Functions, packages, error handling, unit tests and Git. DP-750 expects software development lifecycle practice, including branching, pull requests and testing strategy. DP-700 covers version control and deployment pipelines in Fabric.

Rung 3: PySpark and Delta Lake

DataFrames, partitions, joins at scale and the Delta table format. Both platforms store tables as Delta, so the same upsert runs in a Fabric lakehouse notebook and an Azure Databricks notebook (Unity Catalog adds a catalog and schema to the table name):

from delta.tables import DeltaTable
from pyspark.sql import functions as F

updates = (
    spark.read.table("bronze_customers")
    .withColumn("email", F.lower(F.trim("email")))
    .dropDuplicates(["customer_id"])
)

target = DeltaTable.forName(spark, "silver_customers")
(
    target.alias("t")
    .merge(updates.alias("s"), "t.customer_id = s.customer_id")
    .whenMatchedUpdateAll()
    .whenNotMatchedInsertAll()
    .execute()
)

Learn to read the Spark UI as well. DP-750 tests caching, skew, spill and shuffle problems using the DAG, the Spark UI and query profile. DP-700 tests optimising Spark, lakehouse tables, warehouses and queries.

Rung 4: Lakehouse design and governance

Bronze, silver and gold layers come first, and our medallion architecture guide walks through them. Then security: both exams test row-level and column-level access, and both test masking, with dynamic data masking in Fabric and row filters and column masks in Unity Catalog.

This is where Singapore context matters. Pipelines here routinely carry NRIC numbers, mobile numbers and addresses, and the PDPA's protection obligation requires reasonable security arrangements for personal data. PDPC's guidelines on AI recommendation and decision systems encourage organisations to pseudonymise data used for model development and to use only the attributes and volume they need. Data engineers are the people who implement that, so treat masking and pseudonymisation as core skills, not extras.

Rung 5: Orchestration, monitoring and cost

Fabric uses pipelines, notebooks, Dataflow Gen2 and Apache Airflow settings. Azure Databricks uses Lakeflow Jobs, Lakeflow Spark Declarative Pipelines and Declarative Automation Bundles. Both exams expect alerts and troubleshooting; DP-750 adds Azure Monitor log streaming and cluster cost management.

DP-700 versus DP-750: what each exam tests

The DP-700 study guide has three areas, each worth 30 to 35%: implement and manage an analytics solution; ingest and transform data; monitor and optimize an analytics solution.

The DP-750 study guide has four: set up and configure an Azure Databricks environment (15 to 20%); secure and govern Unity Catalog objects (15 to 20%); prepare and process data (30 to 35%); deploy and maintain data pipelines and workloads (30 to 35%).

The top half of that table is the shared core. The bottom half is what you add for each platform, and it is smaller than most people expect. Our Azure Databricks Data Engineer Associate guide goes deeper on DP-750 alone.

Choose by the employers you target

The honest answer to "Fabric or Databricks?" is "whichever the companies you want to work for use". You can find that out in an evening:

  1. Collect 20 to 30 current Singapore data engineer roles at your level from MyCareersFuture and LinkedIn.
  2. Tally the platforms named: Fabric, OneLake, Power BI, Synapse, Databricks, Unity Catalog, plus any non-Microsoft stacks.
  3. Note the skills that repeat regardless of platform. Those deserve most of your study hours.

Then read the signals:

Why many employers end up with both

Fabric can mirror an Azure Databricks Unity Catalog. Fabric reads the Databricks tables through shortcuts with no data copy; the mirrored tables are read-only in Fabric, so writes still go through Databricks. That makes a split common in practice: engineering in Databricks, reporting through Fabric and Power BI. An engineer who understands both sides of that boundary is useful to both teams.

Both platforms also run in Singapore. Microsoft lists Southeast Asia as a region with Power BI and all Fabric workloads, and Azure Databricks supports the southeastasia region, located in Singapore. For employers with data residency requirements, be ready to explain in interviews where your pipeline's data lives and why.

By starting point

  • Power BI analyst moving into engineering: DP-700 builds on what you know. If you already hold DP-600, read our DP-600 vs DP-700 comparison.
  • Software developer: either route works; let the job ads decide.
  • Fresh graduate: climb rungs 1 to 3, build the portfolio project below, then certify on the platform your internship or first role uses.

A portfolio project that proves the ladder

Pick a public dataset from data.gov.sg, Singapore's open data portal, and build:

  1. A bronze layer that lands raw files on a schedule.
  2. A silver layer with typed columns, deduplication and an incremental MERGE.
  3. Data quality checks that fail the run loudly.
  4. A gold table for reporting, with one masked column and one row filter.
  5. A scheduled job with an alert, plus a short README explaining your design and cost choices.

Build it once on a Fabric trial, then port the notebooks to Azure Databricks and write up what changed. That one page answers "Fabric or Databricks?" better than any certificate, and it gives an interviewer something concrete to ask about.

Five questions to rehearse before interviews

Whichever platform you choose, technical interviews for data engineering roles probe the same judgement. Prepare a short, concrete answer to each, ideally drawn from your portfolio project:

  1. How do you load only what changed? Explain watermarks, change data capture and MERGE, and what happens when a run fails halfway.
  2. What do you do with late or duplicate records? DP-700 lists duplicate, missing and late-arriving data, and DP-750 lists duplicate, missing and null values, so have a pattern ready for each.
  3. A source adds a column overnight. What breaks? Talk through schema enforcement versus schema evolution, and how you would be alerted.
  4. Where is the personal data, and who can see it? Show the masked column and row filter in your gold table, and explain why you chose them.
  5. Why is this job slow, and what does it cost? Walk through the Spark UI, partitioning and file sizes, and how you would size compute.

A common mistake is answering in tool names only. Interviewers want the reasoning, and the reasoning transfers between Fabric and Databricks.

Exam practicalities: Microsoft's exam duration page gives associate exams 100 minutes, or 120 if they may contain labs. You can open Microsoft Learn during associate exams, but the timer keeps running, so use it to check a detail, not to learn a topic. Check each exam page for the current price in Singapore.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the Microsoft exam for Azure Databricks data engineers?+

DP-750, Implementing Data Engineering Solutions Using Azure Databricks. Passing it earns the Azure Databricks Data Engineer Associate certification. Its skills outline, last updated on 19 October 2026, covers environment setup, Unity Catalog security and governance, data preparation, and deploying and maintaining pipelines, with SQL and Python as the named languages.

Is DP-700 or DP-750 harder?+

Neither is simply harder; they weight different things. DP-700 spreads evenly across managing a Fabric solution, ingesting and transforming data, and monitoring and optimising, and it includes KQL and real-time streaming. DP-750 puts most weight on processing data and running pipelines, plus Unity Catalog governance. The easier one is usually the platform you have used at work.

Do I need both certifications to get a data engineering job in Singapore?+

No. Employers hire for skills, and one well-chosen certification plus a portfolio project shows more than two certificates with no work behind them. Pick the platform your target employers mention most, and keep your SQL, Python and PySpark strong so you can move across when a role needs it.

Can I prepare for DP-700 or DP-750 without work experience?+

Yes, but plan plenty of hands-on time. Both exams are scenario based and may include labs. Use a Fabric trial or an Azure subscription, build a small end-to-end pipeline and practise fixing failures, because both skills outlines spend a large share on monitoring, troubleshooting and optimisation.

Which programming languages should a new data engineer learn first?+

SQL first, then Python, then PySpark. DP-700 names SQL, PySpark and KQL as the languages you should be skilled in, and DP-750 names SQL and Python. Add KQL if you are aiming at Fabric roles that handle streaming, telemetry or log data.
