Azure Databricks Data Engineer Associate (DP-750): Who It Is For

By Abirami Seeni8 min read

The Microsoft Certified: Azure Databricks Data Engineer Associate is the credential you earn by passing exam DP-750. It is built for data engineers who ingest, transform, and govern data on Azure Databricks with SQL and Python, then deploy and monitor that work the way software teams do. If your company runs its lakehouse in Microsoft Fabric instead, DP-700 is the better match.

At a glance

  • Exam: DP-750, Implementing Data Engineering Solutions Using Azure Databricks.
  • Skills measured as of October 19, 2026: environment setup (15 to 20%), Unity Catalog security and governance (15 to 20%), preparing and processing data (30 to 35%), and deploying and maintaining pipelines (30 to 35%).
  • Passing score: 700 or greater, according to Microsoft's study guide.
  • Renewal: every 12 months, through a free online assessment on Microsoft Learn.
  • Free practice: Microsoft lists a DP-750 practice assessment on its practice assessments page.
  • Price: check the exam page for the current price in the United States before you book.

What the certification actually proves

Microsoft's DP-750 study guide describes a candidate who integrates and models data, builds and deploys optimized pipelines, and troubleshoots workloads in Azure Databricks, with data quality and governance handled in Unity Catalog. You are expected to write SQL and Python, follow software lifecycle practices such as Git, and be familiar with Microsoft Entra, Azure Data Factory, and Azure Monitor.

That last point is what separates DP-750 from a general Spark credential. The exam assumes Databricks sits inside an Azure environment: secrets come from Azure Key Vault, identities from Entra service principals and managed identities, streams from Azure Event Hubs, and logs flow to Log Analytics.

It also fills a gap. The older Azure Data Engineer Associate certification (exam DP-203) retired on March 31, 2025, and retired certifications cannot be renewed. DP-750 is now the Microsoft role-based certification built around Azure Databricks data engineering.

Who it is for, and who should wait

A strong fit

  • Data engineers who already build notebooks, jobs, or pipelines on Azure Databricks and want a credential that matches their daily work.
  • SQL developers and BI engineers moving from warehouse work into lakehouse engineering on Azure.
  • Consultants at Microsoft partner firms. Microsoft's Partner Center announcements for June 2026 list Azure Databricks Data Engineer Associate as a new skilling option for the Data and AI Solutions Partner designation.

Better to wait, or choose another path

  • Your platform is Fabric. If your lakehouse, warehouse, and Power BI models live in Fabric, take DP-700. Our DP-600 vs DP-700 guide explains how the two Fabric exams differ.
  • You have never written PySpark. DP-750 expects working code skills. Build those first; the exam is not the place to learn what a DataFrame is.
  • Your Databricks runs on AWS or Google Cloud. Databricks' own certifications test the Databricks platform rather than Azure services, so they carry across clouds more naturally.

The skills measured, in plain terms

Here is what each area means on the job, based on the skills measured as of October 19, 2026. Microsoft rated the October update as a minor change to the data modeling and development lifecycle sections.

Set up and configure the environment (15 to 20%)

Choosing compute: job compute, serverless, SQL warehouses, classic, and shared compute. Sizing clusters, autoscaling, auto-termination, pools, and Photon. Installing libraries and setting compute permissions. Then building the Unity Catalog structure: catalogs, schemas, volumes, tables, views, materialized views, foreign catalogs, and instructions for AI/BI Genie.

Secure and govern Unity Catalog objects (15 to 20%)

Granting privileges to users, groups, and service principals. Row filters, column masks, and attribute-based access control with tags and policies. Reading Key Vault secrets, authenticating with managed identities, tracking lineage in Catalog Explorer, audit logging, retention policies, and a safe Delta Sharing strategy.

Prepare and process data (30 to 35%)

The largest block. Picking an ingestion tool (Lakeflow Connect, notebooks, or Azure Data Factory), batch or streaming, and a table format. Loading with COPY INTO, CTAS, change data capture feeds, Structured Streaming, Event Hubs, and Auto Loader. Choosing slowly changing dimension types, partitioning, and liquid clustering or Z-ordering. Then cleaning duplicates and nulls, joining and pivoting, merging, and enforcing quality with pipeline expectations.

Deploy and maintain pipelines and workloads (30 to 35%)

Designing pipelines with notebooks or Lakeflow Spark Declarative Pipelines, scheduling and alerting with Lakeflow Jobs, Git branching and pull requests, testing, and packaging work with Declarative Automation Bundles deployed through the Databricks CLI or REST APIs. Troubleshooting skew, spill, and shuffle in the Spark UI, running OPTIMIZE and VACUUM, and streaming logs to Azure Monitor.

Watch for renamed features

Two renames trip people up when they study from older tutorials. Delta Live Tables is now Lakeflow Spark Declarative Pipelines, and the Python module moved from dlt to pyspark.pipelines. Databricks Asset Bundles are now Declarative Automation Bundles. The study guide uses the new names, so map old material to them as you go.

Two patterns worth practicing until they feel routine. First, idempotent loading into a bronze table:

CREATE TABLE IF NOT EXISTS main.sales.orders_bronze;

COPY INTO main.sales.orders_bronze
FROM '/Volumes/main/sales/landing/orders'
FILEFORMAT = JSON
FORMAT_OPTIONS ('mergeSchema' = 'true')
COPY_OPTIONS ('mergeSchema' = 'true');

Then a silver table in a pipeline that drops bad rows with an expectation:

from pyspark import pipelines as dp

@dp.table()
@dp.expect_or_drop("positive_amount", "amount > 0")
def orders_silver():
    return spark.readStream.table("main.sales.orders_bronze")

DP-750, DP-700, or a Databricks certification?

The Databricks figures come from its Data Engineer Associate and Professional pages as of October 2026. Databricks asks you to recertify every two years by taking the current version of the exam.

How to choose:

  • Follow the platform. Pick the exam for the platform your employer runs or the roles you are targeting. Job descriptions usually name it.
  • DP-700 is a different toolset. Its study guide covers Eventstream, KQL, OneLake shortcuts, and Fabric deployment pipelines, none of which appear in DP-750.
  • The Databricks Associate overlaps heavily with DP-750. Its outline weights ingestion and loading (21%), transformation and modeling (22%), Lakeflow Jobs (16%), and governance and security (15%). If you pass one, the other is mostly a matter of studying the Azure-specific or Databricks-specific extras.

A six-week study plan

This plan assumes you already write SQL and basic Python and can give it a few focused hours each week. Before you create any compute, set a budget alert in Azure Cost Management and turn on auto-termination for every cluster.

  1. Week 1, workspace and catalog. Create a Unity Catalog structure with a catalog, schemas, and a volume per environment, using a clear dev, test, and prod naming scheme. Run the same notebook on job, serverless, and classic compute and compare.
  2. Week 2, ingestion. Load files with COPY INTO and Auto Loader, stream events from Event Hubs, and use Azure Data Factory to trigger a notebook.
  3. Week 3, transformation. Build bronze, silver, and gold tables, create a Type 2 slowly changing dimension with AUTO CDC, and add expectations that warn, drop, and fail. Our medallion architecture explainer covers the layering logic, which carries over from Fabric.
  4. Week 4, governance. Grant privileges to a group and a service principal, add a row filter and a column mask, tag sensitive columns and try an ABAC policy, then trace lineage in Catalog Explorer.
  5. Week 5, deployment. Put the project in Git, unit test your transformation functions, define a job in a bundle, and deploy it to dev and test targets with the Databricks CLI.
  6. Week 6, operations and review. Break things on purpose: create a skewed join, read the Spark UI, fix it, run OPTIMIZE and VACUUM, and send logs to Log Analytics. Then take the free practice assessment and revisit weak areas.

Common mistakes

  • Studying only the data processing half. Environment setup and governance together carry 30 to 40% of the exam, and they are where gaps in hands-on experience show.
  • Learning from pre-rename material without mapping old names to new ones.
  • Never deploying from the command line. Bundles and the CLI are listed skills, not optional extras.

How CertTulen Academy can help

CertTulen Academy runs live, MCT-led online classes with hands-on labs, which suits DP-750 because most of the exam is about doing rather than memorizing. If your Spark is rusty, start with Practical Data Engineering with Python and PySpark to build the coding base the exam assumes. If your organization is leaning toward Fabric, the Microsoft Fabric Data Engineer (DP-700) course covers that path. For a private team cohort, contact us for a batch that suits your time zone.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the Azure Databricks Data Engineer Associate the same as DP-203?+

No. DP-203 led to the Azure Data Engineer Associate, which retired on March 31, 2025, and covered a broad mix of services such as Synapse, Stream Analytics, and Data Factory. DP-750 leads to a different credential focused on Azure Databricks, Unity Catalog, Lakeflow pipelines and jobs, and the Azure services around them. A retired certification cannot be renewed.

Should I take DP-750 or DP-700 first?+

Take the exam that matches the platform you work on, or the one your target employers use. DP-750 covers Azure Databricks; DP-700 covers Microsoft Fabric, including Eventstream, KQL, and OneLake shortcuts. Spark and SQL skills transfer between them, so the second exam is easier once you pass the first, but the platform-specific objectives are different.

Does the Microsoft certification replace the Databricks Certified Data Engineer Associate?+

No. They are separate credentials from different issuers. As of October 2026, Databricks' associate exam has 45 scored questions in 90 minutes, costs $200, and must be retaken every two years. Microsoft's DP-750 adds Azure services such as Entra, Key Vault, and Azure Monitor, and renews yearly through a free online assessment on Microsoft Learn.

How long does it take to prepare for DP-750?+

If you already write SQL and Python and have touched Databricks, a focused six-week plan with hands-on labs is a sensible target for a working engineer. If you are new to Spark, add several weeks to learn PySpark DataFrames, joins, and streaming basics first. Book the exam only after you can build and deploy a small pipeline end to end without notes.

Is there a free practice test for DP-750?+

Yes. Microsoft lists a free DP-750 practice assessment on its Practice Assessments for Microsoft Certifications page, and you can try the exam interface in Microsoft's exam sandbox. Use the practice assessment near the end of your preparation to find weak areas, then go back to hands-on labs rather than memorizing the questions.
