Microsoft Certifications for Career Changers: 3 Realistic Routes
If you are moving into tech from another career, pick one Microsoft route and finish it: cloud administration (AZ-900, then AZ-104), data analysis (PL-300), or AI development (AI-901, then AI-103). Pair every exam with a small public project, because interviews test what you can do, not how many badges you hold. Plan in weeks for a fundamentals exam and in months for an associate one.
At a glance
| Route | Exams | Good fit if you | Proof project |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cloud admin | AZ-900, then AZ-104 | Enjoy systems and troubleshooting | An Azure environment built from code |
| Data analyst | PL-300 | Already live in spreadsheets | A Power BI report on public data |
| AI developer | AI-901, then AI-103 | Code in Python, or will learn | A small chat app grounded in documents |
How Microsoft certifications work, in five facts
- Two levels matter here. Fundamentals exams (AZ-900, AI-901) check concepts. Associate exams (AZ-104, PL-300, AI-103) check whether you can do the job.
- Passing score. Microsoft requires a score of 700 or greater to pass.
- Exam length. Fundamentals exams run 45 minutes. Associate exams run 100 minutes, or 120 minutes if they may contain labs. In associate exams you can open Microsoft Learn in a split screen; in fundamentals exams you cannot.
- Renewal. Fundamentals certifications do not expire. Associate certifications are valid for one year, and you renew them for free by passing an online assessment on Microsoft Learn before the expiry date. If one lapses, you have to pass the exam again.
- Cost. Exam prices depend on the country where you test, so check the exam page for the current US price before you budget.
Two changes if you started studying a while ago: AI-900 and AI-102 retired on June 30, 2026. AI-901 now leads to the same Azure AI Fundamentals certification, and AI-103 leads to the Azure AI Apps and Agents Developer Associate. Study guides and practice tests written for the retired exams will send you down the wrong path.
A US bonus: the American Council on Education (ACE) has reviewed some Microsoft certification exams for college credit recommendations, and the Azure Fundamentals certification page notes you may be eligible. If you are also working toward a degree, ask your school whether it accepts ACE credit.
Route 1: Cloud administration, AZ-900 then AZ-104
Who it suits: people who like systems, troubleshooting, and keeping things running. IT support, help desk, and operations backgrounds transfer well.
AZ-900 (Azure Fundamentals) covers cloud concepts (25 to 30%), Azure architecture and services (35 to 40%), and Azure management and governance (30 to 35%). Its skills were last updated on July 20, 2026. It is optional, but for a career changer it builds the vocabulary that makes AZ-104 far less painful.
AZ-104 (Azure Administrator) is the real step. As of April 17, 2026, it measures:
- Manage Azure identities and governance (20 to 25%)
- Implement and manage storage (15 to 20%)
- Deploy and manage Azure compute resources (20 to 25%)
- Implement and manage virtual networking (15 to 20%)
- Monitor and maintain Azure resources (10 to 15%)
Microsoft expects candidates to be familiar with operating systems, networking, servers, and virtualization, and to have used PowerShell, the Azure CLI, the Azure portal, ARM templates or Bicep, and Microsoft Entra ID. A common sticking point for career changers is virtual networking, so start those labs early.
Time: plan in weeks for AZ-900 and in months for AZ-104, with hands-on lab time every week.
Proof project: build a small environment from code and publish it on GitHub: a virtual network with two subnets and network security groups, a virtual machine reached through Azure Bastion, a storage account with a lifecycle rule, Azure Backup, a policy that requires an owner tag, and a budget alert. Write a README that explains each choice, then delete the resources. As of October 2026, the Azure free account gives new customers $200 of credit for the first 30 days, and our guide to Azure cost management basics shows how to avoid a surprise bill.
Route 2: Data analysis, PL-300
Who it suits: people who already live in spreadsheets, in finance, operations, sales operations, marketing, HR, or health care administration. Your domain knowledge is an advantage, because analysts are hired to answer business questions, not just to build charts.
PL-300 (Power BI Data Analyst), as of April 20, 2026, measures: prepare the data (25 to 30%), model the data (25 to 30%), visualize and analyze the data (25 to 30%), and manage and secure Power BI (15 to 20%). Microsoft expects you to be proficient in Power Query and DAX. The current version also includes Copilot tasks, such as creating a report page with Copilot, and choosing between Direct Lake, DirectQuery, and Import.
There is no fundamentals exam to take first. Start from the Excel skills you already have, then learn Power Query, star schema modeling, and DAX, in that order.
Time: plan in months, and spend most of it building reports rather than reading.
Proof project: take a public dataset from Data.gov or your city's open data portal. Build a star schema with a proper date table, write measures including time intelligence, add row-level security for a regional manager role, and publish screenshots with a short write-up of what the data shows. Power BI Desktop is a free download, so the tooling costs nothing.
Route 3: AI development, AI-901 then AI-103
Who it suits: people who can already write some code, or who are willing to learn Python first. This is the steepest route for career changers and the one where a portfolio matters most.
AI-901 (Azure AI Fundamentals), as of April 15, 2026, is unusually hands-on for a fundamentals exam: identify AI concepts and capabilities (40 to 45%) and implement AI solutions by using Microsoft Foundry (55 to 60%). Microsoft expects knowledge of Python syntax and familiarity with Azure resources.
AI-103 (Developing AI Apps and Agents on Azure), as of April 16, 2026, expects experience developing apps in Python. It measures: plan and manage an Azure AI solution (25 to 30%), implement generative AI and agentic solutions (30 to 35%), and computer vision, text analysis, and information extraction (10 to 15% each).
Time: if Python is new to you, learn it before AI-901, then plan in months for AI-103.
Proof project: a small retrieval-augmented chat app that answers questions over a set of public documents, with safety filters configured, an evaluation run, and a README that lists your test questions, the wrong answers you found, and how you fixed them. That last part is what interviewers ask about.
Build proof a hiring manager can check
A certification shows you studied. Evidence shows you can do the work. Keep three things public and tidy:
- Your Microsoft Learn transcript, shared through the verifiable link in your Learn profile rather than as a screenshot. It is the same kind of link Microsoft tells students to send colleges for ACE credit.
- One or two GitHub projects, each with a README: the problem, a diagram, how to run it, what it cost, and what you would do next.
- A short write-up or video walking through one project in a few minutes.
Label learning projects honestly. "Built in my own lab" is a strength. Implying production experience you do not have is a risk in any interview.
How to talk about it in interviews
Interviews for junior cloud and data roles tend to probe three things: can you explain the basics clearly, have you actually built something, and will you learn fast. Prepare for each.
Translate your past career. Connect what you did before to the new role:
- A teacher has written instructions for non-experts and juggled competing demands, which maps to documentation and stakeholder work.
- An accountant has reconciled numbers and chased errors, which maps to data validation.
- A retail or restaurant manager has handled incidents under pressure, which maps to operations and support work.
Tell project stories with a structure: the situation, what you built, what broke, how you fixed it, and what you learned. A broken deployment you diagnosed is a better story than a tutorial that worked the first time.
Use honest, specific phrasing. For example: "I hold AZ-104 and I have built and secured Azure networks in my own lab. I have not run production systems yet, and here is how I would approach my first month." That answer is credible because it is precise.
Practice "walk me through" questions out loud. "Walk me through giving a contractor access to one resource group" or "How would you fix a measure that shows the wrong total?" test real understanding, and they are much easier the second time you answer them.
Mistakes that slow career changers down
- Collecting fundamentals badges instead of finishing one associate certification.
- Using exam dumps. They break Microsoft's exam rules and leave you unable to answer interview questions.
- Studying without a lab. Every associate exam assumes hands-on practice.
- Leaving cloud resources running after a lab session.
- Letting an associate certification lapse. Renewal is free; earning it again is not.

Frequently Asked Questions
Which Microsoft certification is best for a career changer with no IT background?+
It depends on the work you want. If you enjoy spreadsheets and business questions, PL-300 builds on skills you may already have. If you prefer systems and troubleshooting, start with AZ-900 and move to AZ-104. The AI route through AI-901 and AI-103 assumes Python, so it is the hardest starting point without coding experience.
Do I need AZ-900 before taking AZ-104?+
No. AZ-900 is not a formal prerequisite for AZ-104. For career changers it is still useful because it covers cloud concepts, core Azure services, and cost and governance basics in a shorter, less technical exam. If you already work with servers or networks, you can go straight to AZ-104 and spend the time on labs instead.
Is AI-900 still available?+
No. Microsoft retired AI-900 on June 30, 2026. The replacement exam is AI-901, which still leads to the Microsoft Certified: Azure AI Fundamentals certification but focuses on Microsoft Foundry and expects knowledge of Python syntax. AI-102 retired on the same date and was replaced by AI-103 for the Azure AI Apps and Agents Developer Associate.
Do Microsoft certifications expire?+
Fundamentals certifications such as Azure Fundamentals do not expire. Associate certifications such as Azure Administrator and Power BI Data Analyst are valid for one year. You can renew them for free by passing an online renewal assessment on Microsoft Learn before the expiry date. If a certification expires, you must pass the exam again to regain it.
Can a Microsoft certification count toward a US college degree?+
Possibly. The American Council on Education has reviewed some Microsoft certification exams and made college credit recommendations. Many US colleges accept ACE recommendations, but each school sets its own policy. Microsoft asks you to send a verifiable link to your Microsoft Learn transcript, not a screenshot, along with the ACE-listed exam link.
