AB-731 AI Transformation Leader: A Guide for Malaysian Managers
AB-731 is the Microsoft exam behind the Microsoft Certified: AI Transformation Leader credential. It is a beginner-level certification for managers and business owners who lead AI adoption with Microsoft 365 Copilot, Copilot Studio and Microsoft Foundry, and it involves no coding. It tests three things: the business value of generative AI, what Microsoft's AI services can do, and how to plan adoption responsibly.

What AB-731 actually certifies
Microsoft describes the candidate as a business decision-maker "at all levels" who guides transformation within a team or organisation. You are expected to show AI fluency, strategic vision and the ability to lead adoption across functions. You are not expected to write code.
The audience profile asks for two things that candidates often skip. First, experience leading adoption or change management in a business context. Second, familiarity with Microsoft 365 services, Microsoft Foundry and general AI capabilities. A department head who has run an ERP upgrade or a new HR system rollout already has the change management half. The product knowledge is what most managers need to build.
AB-731 also replaced an older leadership course. Microsoft retired AI-3017, "AI for business leaders", on 27 February 2026 and named AB-731T00 as its replacement. Study notes built around AI-3017 are now out of date.
Skills measured, and what they mean in practice
The AB-731 study guide splits the exam into three domains.
| Domain | Weight | Core topics |
|---|---|---|
| Business value of generative AI | 35 to 40% | Models, costs, risks, prompting, grounding |
| Microsoft AI apps and services | 35 to 40% | Copilot, Copilot Studio, Graph, Foundry Tools |
| Implementation and adoption | 20 to 25% | Responsible AI, governance, champions, licences |
Business value is about judgement, not definitions
This domain rewards the manager who can say when generative AI is the wrong tool. Know the difference between pretrained and fine-tuned models, why grounding answers in company documents reduces fabrications, and why token usage drives cost and return on investment. Retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) appears by name. Be able to explain it in one sentence: the system first retrieves relevant documents, then the model answers using them. The domain also covers data quality, secure AI, and when traditional machine learning adds more value than a chatbot.
Microsoft's product names keep moving
The study guide refers to Microsoft 365 Copilot, Copilot Chat, Copilot Studio, Microsoft Graph, Researcher and Analyst, and Foundry Tools such as Azure Vision in Foundry Tools and Azure AI Search. Microsoft's own documentation now says Microsoft 365 Copilot is named Microsoft Copilot. Learn both names and focus on what each product does. You also need the "build, buy or extend" decision, including the Microsoft 365 Copilot extensibility framework.
For a Malaysian SME, the comparison that matters most is the included Copilot Chat against the paid licence. We cover that in Copilot Chat or Microsoft 365 Copilot.
Adoption is the smallest domain, and the easiest to lose marks on
Expect scenario questions on who sits on an AI council, how a champions programme works, which barriers slow adoption, and which Copilot licence type fits: pay-as-you-go, monthly, or included with a Microsoft 365 subscription. Foundry Tools subscription models, pay-as-you-go and commitment tiers, are listed too.
Microsoft's responsible AI principles and Malaysia's AIGE
The study guide lists Microsoft's responsible AI standards: fairness, reliability and safety, privacy and security, inclusiveness, transparency and accountability. Malaysian managers have a second framework worth knowing. The Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation (MOSTI) released the National Guidelines on AI Governance and Ethics (AIGE) in September 2024, with seven principles. They are voluntary, but they are the obvious local reference for a company AI policy.
| Microsoft principle | Closest AIGE principle |
|---|---|
| Fairness | Fairness |
| Reliability and safety | Reliability, safety and control |
| Privacy and security | Privacy and data security |
| Inclusiveness | Inclusivity |
| Transparency | Transparency |
| Accountability | Accountability |
| No direct match | Human benefit |
The exam tests Microsoft's version, but the two lists are close enough that one internal policy can cite both. For the detail, read our explainer on Malaysia's AI governance and ethics guidelines. Privacy questions also touch local law: the Personal Data Protection (Amendment) Act 2024 added mandatory data protection officers and breach notification, covered in our PDPA and AI tools guide.
Who should take AB-731
Microsoft's course page names directors, VPs and executives across marketing, sales, operations, HR, finance and strategy, plus aspiring leaders. In a Malaysian organisation that usually means:
- Owners and general managers of SMEs deciding whether to buy Copilot licences
- Heads of HR, finance and operations sponsoring an AI rollout
- Digital transformation, PMO and innovation leads
- Consultants and account managers who advise clients on Microsoft AI
It is a poor fit if what you want is hands-on skill with Copilot in Word, Excel and Teams. That is AB-730. It is not an admin or developer exam either. IT administrators should look at AB-900, and people building agents should look at Copilot Studio training.
AB-731 vs AB-730
Both are beginner certifications with a 45-minute exam and no coding. They answer different questions.
| AB-731 | AB-730 | |
|---|---|---|
| Credential | AI Transformation Leader | AI Business Professional |
| Core question | Where do we use AI, and how? | How do I use Copilot well? |
| Skills updated | 22 July 2026 | 20 October 2026 |
| Main content | Value, services, adoption | Prompts, content, meetings, agents |
The AB-730 update on 20 October 2026 added a new domain on driving business outcomes with agents, including Microsoft Copilot Cowork, and removed the old objective on creating Copilot agents. If you studied AB-730 before that date, re-read the guide.
Which comes first? Neither is a prerequisite for the other. If you sponsor the rollout, start with AB-731. If you have barely used Copilot yourself, AB-730 first gives you the hands-on feel that makes AB-731's scenarios easier to reason about. A common pattern is AB-731 for the leadership team and AB-730 for the staff who will use Copilot daily.
A four-week preparation plan
This plan assumes three to four hours a week alongside a full-time job.
Week 1: find your baseline
Read the study guide end to end. Take the free practice assessment linked from the certification page to find your weakest domain. List every term you cannot explain in one sentence, such as grounding, RAG, fine-tuning, tokens and Microsoft Graph, and clear that list by the end of the week.
Week 2: use what you already own
If your company runs Microsoft 365, Copilot Chat is included with eligible plans. Use it every day for a week: summarise a report, draft an email, upload a file and question it. If anyone in your organisation has the paid licence, ask for a demonstration of Researcher and Analyst, which the exam names. Skim the Copilot Studio and Microsoft Foundry overviews so the build, buy or extend questions make sense.
Week 3: write your own adoption plan
The adoption domain is easier to learn by doing. Draft one page for your organisation: three use cases ranked by value, who sits on the AI council, how champions are chosen, the licence mix, the main data and privacy risks, and how you will measure results. It doubles as a real paper for your next management meeting.
Week 4: practise the exam
Try the exam sandbox to see the interface, retake the practice assessment, and revise responsible AI and licensing. Then schedule the exam from the certification page. If you do not pass, Microsoft allows a retake 24 hours after the first attempt.
Common mistakes
- Treating AB-731 as a technical exam and memorising limits nobody asks about
- Skipping cost topics, even though tokens and licence types appear in two domains
- Studying from notes written for AI-3017 or before the July 2026 update
- Assuming adoption is common sense, when questions follow Microsoft's specific model of AI councils, adoption teams and champions

Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need technical skills to pass AB-731?+
No coding is required. Microsoft designed the AI Transformation Leader certification for business decision-makers. You do need working knowledge of generative AI ideas such as grounding, retrieval-augmented generation, tokens and model types, and of what Microsoft 365 Copilot, Copilot Studio and Microsoft Foundry can do. Experience leading a rollout or change project helps with the adoption questions.
How long is the AB-731 exam and what score do I need?+
Microsoft's certification page states that you have 45 minutes to complete the exam, and a score of 700 or greater is required to pass. The exam is proctored. If you fail, you can retake it 24 hours after the first attempt, and the waiting time for later retakes varies under Microsoft's retake policy.
Can I take AB-731 in Bahasa Melayu?+
Not as of October 2026. The exam is offered in English, Arabic, Chinese (Simplified and Traditional), French, German, Indonesian, Italian, Korean, Japanese, Portuguese (Brazil), Russian and Spanish. If the exam is not available in your preferred language, Microsoft's study guide says you can request an additional 30 minutes to complete it.
Should a manager take AB-730 or AB-731?+
Take AB-731 if your job is deciding where AI fits, sponsoring a rollout or approving licences. Take AB-730 if you mainly want to use Copilot well in your own emails, documents and meetings. Neither is a prerequisite for the other, and many leaders who have not used Copilot much find AB-730 a helpful first step.
Can my company claim AB-731 training through HRD Corp?+
CertTulen Academy is an HRD Corp accredited training provider, and many of its professional courses can be claimed by HRD Corp registered employers. Whether a particular class is claimable depends on your employer's registration, the scheme and the grant approval, which must be applied for before training starts. Ask us which courses are claimable before you book.
