AB-730 Exam Guide: How to Prepare for AI Business Professional
AB-730 is the exam for the Microsoft Certified: AI Business Professional certification. Since October 20, 2026, it tests four areas: generative AI fundamentals, prompts and chats in Microsoft 365 Copilot, business content and meetings, and a new section on prebuilt agents and Copilot Cowork. The best preparation is using Copilot every day on real work tasks, then filling gaps against the official skills list.

What changed on October 20, 2026
Microsoft's AB-730 study guide includes a change log, and this update was not cosmetic. The audience profile had a major rewrite, and the exam now centers on Microsoft 365 Copilot by name.
| Before October 20, 2026 | From October 20, 2026 | Change |
|---|---|---|
| Manage prompts and conversations by using AI | Manage prompts and chats by using Microsoft 365 Copilot | Major, smaller share |
| Create and manage Microsoft 365 Copilot agents | (none) | Removed |
| Draft and analyze business content by using AI | Manage business content and collaboration by using Microsoft 365 Copilot | Major, smaller share |
| (none) | Drive business outcomes by using agents | New section |
What this means for you:
- Building agents is out. Creating and managing your own Copilot agents was removed. That skill now belongs to Copilot Studio territory, covered in our Copilot Studio guide.
- Using prebuilt agents and Cowork is in. A full section, worth 20 to 25%, now covers choosing and applying prebuilt agents and delegating work to Microsoft Copilot Cowork.
- Older prep material is out of date. Courses, videos, and practice questions written before October 20 will miss Cowork and spend time on agent building you no longer need.
One more detail: Microsoft updates the English version of an exam first and localized versions about eight weeks later. If you plan to test in another language, check which version you will get.
The four skill areas and what to practice
1. Understand generative AI fundamentals (25 to 30%)
This is the largest single area. You need to explain how Copilot keeps organizational information private and secure, how context such as Work IQ, web data, or the app you are in changes a response, and when to use Copilot Chat, an agent, or Cowork. The responsible AI half covers common risks (inaccuracies, prompt injection, and over-reliance), choosing verification steps such as citation checks and human review, and how data protection limits what a prompt can return.
Practice: run the same work question with Work IQ turned on and then off, and compare the answers. Microsoft's Copilot overview explains the difference and the license tiers behind it, which is useful background for this section.
2. Manage prompts and chats by using Microsoft 365 Copilot (20 to 25%)
Writing effective prompts, including choosing a model, and referencing the right files or emails. Saving, scheduling, and sharing prompts, refining a prompt based on the response, and understanding how Copilot uses memory and instructions. Then the housekeeping: finding, renaming, and deleting chats, and organizing information with Notebooks.
Practice: create a scheduled prompt that summarizes your week every Friday, save a prompt you reuse, and share it with a colleague. Build one notebook for a real project and add files to it.
3. Manage business content and collaboration by using Microsoft 365 Copilot (20 to 25%)
Drafting and analyzing content in Word, Excel, and PowerPoint, using connectors to reach sources beyond Microsoft 365, generating images and charts, deriving insights across Work IQ, and checking that the output actually meets the business goal. The meetings half covers preparing for a meeting, using the Facilitator agent, real-time catchup, Intelligent recap, and collaborating in Copilot Pages.
Practice: in a real Teams meeting, turn on Facilitator for live notes; Microsoft's Facilitator setup page lists what it can do, from shared notes to drafting a Word document from the discussion. Afterward, move the recap into a Copilot Page and edit it with a colleague.
4. Drive business outcomes by using agents (20 to 25%)
Two parts. First, prebuilt agents: spotting where one improves a workflow, choosing between a prebuilt and a custom agent, applying an agent inside different Copilot experiences, and filtering chats by agent. Second, Cowork: how it carries out multistep tasks, how it uses skills, its security considerations and known limitations, choosing prebuilt or custom skills, delegating work, reviewing its plan, progress, and results, and managing scheduled tasks.
Practice: ask Copilot Cowork to prepare a meeting pack for tomorrow. Watch the steps it plans, approve one action, cancel another, and review the result. Then try Researcher on a question that needs both web and work sources. Our guide to Copilot Notebooks, Pages and agents walks through each tool.
If you cannot reach Cowork, that is common: it needs a Microsoft 365 Copilot (Premium) license and an admin who has enabled usage-based billing. Ask IT whether you can join a pilot, and study the Cowork documentation closely in the meantime.
A four-week study plan
This plan assumes a few hours a week and daily access to Microsoft 365 Copilot.
- Week 1, fundamentals. Read the Copilot overview and the privacy and data protection material. Each day, write down one Copilot answer you had to correct and why. That log becomes your responsible AI revision notes.
- Week 2, prompts and chats. Practice prompt structure (goal, context, source, expectations), model selection, saved and scheduled prompts, memory, and Notebooks.
- Week 3, content and meetings. Draft a document in Word, analyze a table in Excel, build a short deck in PowerPoint, and run Facilitator, catchup, and recap in Teams meetings. Finish each task in a Copilot Page.
- Week 4, agents and review. Use prebuilt agents and Cowork on real tasks, take the free practice assessment, and spend the last days on your weakest area.
Practice ideas that mirror the skills list
The skills list is full of decision verbs: understand when to use, select, choose between. So practice making choices, not memorizing menus. Build a decision sheet like this and test yourself against it:
| Situation | Best choice |
|---|---|
| Quick rewrite of an email | Copilot Chat or Copilot in Outlook |
| Cited report from files, email, and the web | Researcher agent |
| Work grounded in one project's documents only | Copilot Notebooks |
| A team editing an AI draft together | Copilot Pages |
| A multistep task that sends and schedules | Copilot Cowork |
| A process no prebuilt agent covers | A custom agent, built by a maker |
Also rehearse the verification habit. For every important output, ask: which sources did it use, are the numbers right, and would I sign my name to it? That mindset covers much of the responsible AI section.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need technical skills to pass AB-730?+
No coding is needed. Microsoft describes the candidate as someone who uses Microsoft 365 Copilot, Copilot Cowork, and prebuilt agents to improve business work without building AI apps. You should be comfortable in Outlook, Word, Teams, PowerPoint, and Excel and understand everyday business tasks such as drafting emails, building presentations, and managing documents.
Is my older AB-730 study material still useful?+
Partly. Material written before October 20, 2026 still helps with generative AI basics and prompting, but it will spend time on creating Copilot agents, which was removed, and it will miss the new section on prebuilt agents and Copilot Cowork, worth 20 to 25% of the exam. Check every resource against the current study guide.
Can I prepare for AB-730 without a Microsoft 365 Copilot license?+
You can study the concepts, but hands-on practice is much harder. Many skills, such as Work IQ grounding, Facilitator in meetings, and Cowork, depend on licensed features and tenant settings. If your employer has no license, ask about a pilot, use Microsoft's documentation and the free practice assessment, and consider instructor-led training with lab access.
How is AB-730 different from AB-731?+
AB-730, AI Business Professional, is about using Copilot and agents to do your own work. AB-731, AI Transformation Leader, is for business decision makers who plan AI adoption, judge business value, and choose between Microsoft AI services. If you lead adoption, AB-730 gives you hands-on fluency first, and AB-731 then adds the strategy view.
Is there a free AB-730 practice test?+
Yes. Microsoft lists a free AB-730 practice assessment on its Practice Assessments for Microsoft Certifications page, and the exam sandbox lets you try the question interface. Take the practice assessment after you have covered all four skill areas, then return to hands-on tasks for any area where you scored low.
